🛑 KNOW BEFORE YOU GO! Planning to hit the river for the 4th of July weekend? 🦅 🗽🎆 🎇🍔 🌭 🍉 🥤 🥳 Before you pack up the family and gear ☀️🕶️🎣🚣♂️, check out the Friends of the Shenandoah River (FOSR) latest E. coli data to help keep you stay informed.
While most monitored locations were below the limit, three specific sites exceeded the EPA’s recommended threshold of 235 CFU per 100 mL of water for primary body-contact recreation.
⚠️ Here is what you need to know before heading out:
- Main-stem Shenandoah River: The only Main-stem river site with elevated E. coli levels was at Lockes Landing public boat landing (Clarke County, VA) – Level: 547.5 CFU/100 mL
- Manassas Run (Warren County, VA) — Upstream of the confluence with the main-stem Shenandoah River, just upstream of the public boat landing – Level: 235.9 CFU/100 mL
- Hawksbill Creek (Page County, VA) — Luray-Hawksbill Greenway Pocket Park in Luray – Level: 365.4 CFU/100 mL
💡 Why this matters: Bacteria spikes can happen quickly and unpredictably, especially during warmer summer weather or following localized rainfall. Reviewing site-specific data allows you to make informed decisions before paddling, fishing, playing, or relaxing in the River.
❤️ Keep This Program Alive! The “KNOW BEFORE YOU GO!” program is powered by community support. Donations allow FOSR to track these unpredictable spikes and deliver real-time, site-specific data to you.
