Friends of Shenandoah are proud to launch the 10th year of our KNOW BEFORE YOU GO! Summer E. coli Testing Program at public access sites along the North Fork, South Fork, and Main Stem of the Shenandoah River. This year, we will continue to include testing at Hawksbill Creek at the Luray-Hawksbill Greenway Pocket Park, downstream of the pedestrian bridge.
Through this program, we provide timely water quality data to help residents and visitors make informed decisions about potential exposure to E. coli bacteria while enjoying recreation on the river. Whether you are paddling, fishing, playing, or simply relaxing in the water, KNOW BEFORE YOU GO! offers valuable information to support a more enjoyable river experience throughout the summer season.
Results from the first testing event of the summer, conducted on May 19, 2026, showed that E. coli levels at every site tested were below the EPA’s recommended threshold of 235 CFUs.
